2 women killed in Huntsville homes, suspect arrested

Huntsville police have charged a Boaz man with killing two women Monday night in the Five Points neighborhood. They say he stole prescription medicine from one and then shot the other to steal her car for a getaway.

The Madison County Coroner’s Office identified the women Tuesday as Mary Blevins, 77, and Nancy Louise Young, 59.

Otis Preston Mayes, 27, charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of two Huntsville women Sept. 11, 2017. (Madison County Jail)

Otis Mayes, 27, of Boaz became a suspect after he allegedly wrecked the stolen car and ran from the accident scene. He was spotted near the Huntsville Utilities building on Church Street and taken into custody while carrying a handgun, police said. He has been charged with two counts of murder.

Police tracked the wrecked car back to owner Young in the 1400 block of Halsey Avenue, where they found her dead from a gunshot wound. Young, who did not know Mayes, opened her front door and was shot for her car, police suspect.

Investigators suspect Mayes, who had been staying with a family member in a trailer park around the corner on Windham Street, went first to the trailer of 77-year-old Blevins. Once inside, he is suspected of shooting her and taking her prescription medicine before running to Halsey Avenue where he allegedly stole the car.

Mayes in February pleaded guilty to stealing a pickup truck and escaping while from the custody of police in Marshall County, according to court records.
